This poem for Pete Rose is made to remember a baseball player whose time at the bat, in the field, and in the sport had reached both top and bottom, but not dimmed our recollection.

Thank you for your kind review and your full recollection of "Charlie Hustle." I don't think anyone will meet his hitting record, and nobody played baseball like he did (warts and all).

Pete Rose, indeed was a very good baseball player. It is a shame that his record has been so much by accusations of gambling. But that still does not take away from the fact that he was a very good hitter. Patricia

    Hello Patricia.
Pete was one of the handful of the best ball players of all time. No one will ever equal his hitting record. He was noted for his hard work and hard playing of the game. His nickname was Charlie Hustle. Thank you for taking the time to review and comment on this post I appreciate your words.

The once great game of baseball has met its fate. Time never was an issue with starting and finishing a game. But now the starters leave after five, and five or six bull pen arms TRY to finish the game. 30-40-50 million a year for pitching either less than 200 innings, or 15-30-45 for finishing fewer than 40 innings. And the time it takes to exchange pitchers... makes the game near intolerable.

    Hello Tom.
You have pinned the tail on the donkey with baseball. I believe over the years, there were thirteen 30 game winners. There will never be another one. ost of the pitching by starters these days is in the bullpen. No one will ever come close to Pete Rose's hit record, but they will make a lot more money. I like your perspective on baseball and now it is infecting the other sports as well. I didn't watch the super bowl but I did watch the world series last fall.

As for the Super Bowl, I faded once the RAP movement performed and did not return.

Great subject for your ode, and best of luck in the contest. Too bad Pete Rose's career was ended because of controversy. As you wrote, he was one of the greats. Oh, I'm seeing more and more of those digitally generated pictures. You did a great job with co-pilot. I haven't tried any of that fancy stuff. Excellent rhyme and details about Rose's batting. One thought--you might use ball instead of orb or use a pronoun where you've repeated orb. judi

Thank you very much for your positive review and for your interesting comments. Rose was one of the best. He was one of the best five players to ever play the game and maybe better than that. When the contest is over come back and check with me and I might be able to help you with the co-pilot. That picture actually turned out better than I anticipated. 14 is Rose's number. This year the team will be wearing his number patch on their uniform everyday. They love him in Cincinnati. Just contact me after the contest when you see my information and I can help you I think with co-pilot. I've learned some interesting tricks.

I'm not terribly au fair with American baseball, but I am, however, aufait with with cricket, international and domestic over a couple of hundred years. This is a beautifully written post, in pentameter and abab rhyming, smooth, articulate an well done, blessings Roy

Thank you for your positive and meaningful review. Pete Rose set hitting records that will never be broken. His nickname was Charlie Hustle. He was the very definition of the game.

I did not know this. Sadly, all I know is the scandal associated with his name. Thanks for making me smarter today, Z.

My husband and his son (ten that year) and I went to Cooperstown the year that Cal Ripkin and Tony Gwynn were inducted into the HoF, and we saw Pete Rose. It was a pretty sad, because while stars like Goose Gosage and Vida Blue were out on the main drag, at tables, signing balls and caps, etc., Pete was stuck way in the back of this kind of seedy-looking store - no fanfare, no sign, no nothing. We just "happened" into the place, and there he was at a card table, no line formed to get anything autographed. Like I said, very sad.

Very well done poem. xoxo

    Hi Rachelle.
Thank you very much for your meaningful review. I have heard other stories about rose being relegated to the back room at celebrations there are Major League Baseball players in the Hall of Fame and record holders who have not been disqualified even though they used PEDs. The rules just need to apply to everyone. Rose has had a hard time with Major League Baseball since he retired. He should be in the Hall of Fame and he should be respected for what he did. In my opinion, he's the best baseball player ever. You would never know it to read the press No one will ever match or exceed is total hits in a career. He was the hardest working baseball player ever. This year, the Reds will wear the Rose patch on their uniforms every game. They love him in Cincy.

Hi Robert,
I never really enjoyed baseball until I got along later on in life. I recall coming in from a fishing trip and turning on a game, and realizing how much I really enjoyed it. It was unfortunate that Pete got all caught up in the gambling situation. It seems to have cost him a lot of recognition. Well done my friend.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

    Hello Tom.
I've always been a baseball fan and even more so now. I was a big Cincinnati Reds fan and I still am. Pete Rose was quite possibly the best player ever to play the game. I was very disappointed years ago when he was involved in gambling. It damaged his legacy. Thank you for taking time to respond to this poem. I really appreciate it.

I like the way this ode to Pete Rose evolves from his entry on to the field to the detail of his amazing hitting of the ball to the legend he has become. Your well-metered verse with its excellent rhyming pattern gives the reader a succinct and vivid picture of a player who may never be surpassed. Well done and good luck, Debbie

    Hello Debbie.
Rose was clearly one of the greatest baseball players ever the number of hits he had in his career will never be matched by anyone else. He's the only player who got more than 4000 hits in a career That's remarkable He was the hardest working player ever. He never took a minute off. Thank you for your positive comments about the writing style of the poem. This was a fun one for me.

I remember marveling over his skill...and his smile, too. It's a shame that he isn't allowed to be enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame... However when I visited there, they had a "display" dedicated to his many achievements on a separate floor. I found that rather off-putting. Capitalize on his name, but don't include him officially? Ah -- that's the world for you!

Excellent Ode and you did a great job creating that image as well, Z!

    Thanks K.
Rose was absolutely the best ball player I ever saw and I saw all of them in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and till now. I don't think anybody will ever match the number of hits he had in his career I don't think anyone will match his energy. He played at breakneck speed every game.
Thank you for your meaningful comments. Lots of players who took PEDs still hold records, and some are in the Hall of Fame. We need to treat them all the same.

Yet, he will be remembered as a cheater, and will never have a place--even though perhaps deserved--in the baseball hall of fame.

I remember many a Saturday watching him play with the Red, me and my dad in front of the television watching our favorite team.

This is a wonderful ode to a man whom, I assume, you admired very much.

    Hello Pam.
Yes, Pete will be remembered for betting on baseball when he was playing. Did you know that there are PED users in the Hall of Fame. There are PED users holding baseball records. Same standard needs to be applied to everyone, no matter what we are speaking about. Rose is the greatest hitter to ever play baseball. I admire his baseball skills, not his gambling skills.
