Hi Liz, I enjoyed reading about your summer in NYC, the city of my youth and where I was raised.

Of special note:

--I had forgotten I used to get motion sick.

(L, whenever I rode the Greyhound bus, I too, would get sick. I always got sick as the bus was approaching the Lincoln Tunnel which is just on the other side of the Port Authority. I don't think that it was the motion. I believe that it was the smell of the diesel smell. There was always a bottleneck getting through the tunnel, and many times, the bus did not move for 5-10 minutes. I think the smell of the diesel and the accumulated car fumes is what made me sick. Perhaps, you too. It's amazing that I'm reading about this in your story today because I was just talking yesterday to my brother about my bus sickness.)

--What a cultural opportunity to attend Broadway Shows and an Opera.

(Do you remember which Broadway show you attended? I was raised in that neighborhood, and all (or most) of the mothers worked in the Broadway theaters in the evening. That was my mother's second job.
The thing about all the neighborhood moms working in the theaters was that us kids got to see all the newest and latest shows for free. Not bad for a bunch of poor kids from Hell's Kitchen.)

--To dress formally for such events I wore those spike heels.

(The days of dressing up to go to the theater and dressing up to go on a plane are gone. Now people wear whatever they want. Many people are wearing the PJ's on the planes.)

-- When there is an option, I take the stairs or the elevator.

(My daughter still does not like escalators, and she is a grown woman and mother. She opts for elevator or stairs.)

--Another amusing experience I had that summer in New York was when we attended Madame Butterfly.

(I'm assuming that you saw Madame Butterfly at Lincoln Center which means, if you did, you were were I did my bottling collecting. That was the construction site that my brother and I would go to.)

-- It was in a box of female necessities Mother hid bubble gum. The contraband was discovered, confiscated, and a penance to go with it.

(Your mother wanted you to have some small pleasure of your own. Bless her heart. To think that they had nothing better to do than to do through a box of personal items is quite sad and unproductive.)

Another great story. You had me at NYC, when NYC was still Old NY, and just at the beginning of being changed forever. Your story, and your memories made me smile because some of those memories are also mine.

Question ... when you were at Jones Beach, did you see the Blue Angels flyover? Well done. Xo. M

Thank you for your complementary review. The musical we saw was Music Man. We had Madame Butterfly in a baseball stadium. That's cool that old New York was familiar to you. At Jones's Beach I was so out of it I probably wouldn't even have noticed the Blue Angels flying by. Nice to know people don't have to get all decked out to go to a show.
your addition made it very interesting. A familiar location for bottle collecting. thank you

I do remember The Music Man playing on Broadway. I think that it played at The Winter Garden ... from my memory. M

I have no idea it was somewhere in New York City I don't know if that's the one that had the escalator or not. Probably.

This was a fun read as it grabbed my attention and held it from start to finish. I, still to this day I have a very real fear of escalators. If I can avoid them I will. I will go all the way around to find a staircase just to avoid using one.

Being right out of high school it looks like you had a very challenging adventure going into the big city. I enjoyed listening to your story very much. When it comes to the high heel shoes, I could never wear high heel shoes made my feet hurt so bad. Patricia .

I'm sure it was "bittersweet" to write about but I'm glad you did. I enjoyed your descriptions of your first time experiences with the escalator, the opera, and the ocean! I grew up in Hawaii and can't imagine not knowing the ocean. And I laughed at your mom putting bubblegum in your feminine hygiene package. She knew what you liked and wanted to provide some small comfort. Sigh.

You had a lot of adventures during this time. Your mother doesn't seem to understand the need for deprivations which was the life of a nun. Was your family even Catholic? I don't remember if you said. Was becoming a nun your decision or hour family's? A friend of mine became a Franciscan Priest to please his mother and left the priesthood to marry weeks after her funeral.

Thank you for your interested review. I entered the convent on my own and actually my parents weren't really that crazy about it. I'd always wanted to be a nun The next chapter kind of explains it a little bit as probably why. The reasons I wanted to leave were very different than the reasons I wanted to enter. We were a Catholic family and had Catholic nuns for our religious instruction every Saturday. Somehow I just knew I wanted to be a nun. No one who came in with me stayed Most of them left much sooner than I did Some stayed only like 10 years and I stayed 208 years.

It sounds like the trip to New York was a learning experience and an enjoyable experience. I'm not Catholic so I feel all that confiscating of gifts was unnecessary but I know there must be a reason. Christ was given things like expensive oils and his feet was rubbed with it. He seemed there was nothing wrong with that. This is nicely written. I enjoyed readingit.

Thank you for your lovely review. All that those rules were made by men and if you read my book tour you would see that it was in same stuff going on in the 16th century. It wasn't difficult for me to write certain parts of my time warp section about the 16th century monastery because we were living the same way even in the 20th century. These rules were made up mostly by men. But our sisters that were our leaders had to go by them. They were purposeless as far as we were concerned. It was supposed to bring you closer to God I guess. It did not.

I would think it would fuel resentment.

I guess people were just brainwashed. It was all tied up with God and that god would love us better and we'd have a closer relationship with God. I certainly have a different relationship with God.

I wish once more I had that extra str. You deserve it just for what you went through. Certainly not something The Lord would approve of. Also, having been through Vermont, Harlem, and The Bowery I could truly identify with your emotions, Great work!

I didn't realise you received Holy Orders Liz. That's amazing, I've never known such a person, but you certainly had a baptism of fire in your trip to and sojourn in New York, my elder child lived in NY for four and a half years, so we know it well. Beautifully written Liz, blessings Roy

I totally enjoyed reading your story. You're not afraid to have a laugh about yourself. I usually try to help with editing, but I got so into your story, I just read for content. Well done. I wish we had more posts of personal memories.

Thank you for your enthusiastic review. You can read any of my other posts about personal memories by going on my portfolio. You don't have to write any review just enjoy it. They're all equally as enjoyable. People on here have thoroughly enjoyed the documentation of my memories. I wrote these 20 plus years ago and I have been reading stuff and don't remember it happening. My advice to people is write your memoirs or your begin your autobiography when you're in your 50s cuz you won't remember them when you're in your 70s.

These rule or regulations would have been very difficult to for me to follow.
I struggle with things like that. Thank you for sharing this with us. I enjoyed reading.

I still have to wait an inordinate amount of time for the right stair

if it's going to puncture the top of the elevator cage ceiling. When we had to wait for our father at his office (Space needed after the period)

Thank you for your complementary review. I did have difficulty following the rules. I got a lot of penances for not following the rules.
