Good article, Ingrid. Lots of useful info. I didn't realize that Nancy Wagner ran Page and Spine. Good for her. The best place to publish your own books is createspace.com, run by amazon. It's totally free. I have all my books on amazon thru them.

We really should accumulate our collective knowledge to assist all members and point them in a direction.

Ingrid, you're the best! Thanks for posting an article on publishing that many FanStorians can sink their teeth in.
After thirty years of selling experience before retiring, I couldn't agree more that everything (not just books) have to be sold.
You've done your readers a great service by delineating the perimeters of literary marketing and suggesting alternatives that one might never consider.
Just a few suggestions:
write for extensive periods of time. [Suggest EXTENDED, which has to do with time; extensive with space.]
There's lots of opportunity and help [Either: "There IS A LOT of opportunity and help", Or...
There ARE LOTS of OPPORTUNITIES and help." > That's a tricky one.]

You explained the difference between extensive and extended as I haven't heard or understood until you did. Thanks. Corrections made.

Very useful, informative commentary on how to be published. Well written guidelines and well expressed opinions. I wish you luck, with ambition and drive you will succeed. I spotted an error, Para 1, line 3, the noun is advice, the verb is advise, so here it is advice. Enjoyable read, Faye

Thanks for picking up the error. Already corrected.

Thank you for that advice. I have published a book of spiritual poems and the self publishing company made belief that the kit you paid for provided many facilities which it did not. Eventually I did my own marketing and pushed off on the market

What did the first adventure cost you? I've heard horror stories.

this is an excellent write, spiritual echo, I like the advice you have given and the details about the self publishing word that comes in handy. I only spotted one error in your essay--first paragraph, I can hardly give advice instead of give advise.
