A chapter in the book Sonnets

A Raptor's Child

by michaelcahill

With craning neck, my eyes look up to view
an eagle ruling all that lies beneath.
Like field mice, I'm considered from above
My thoughts turn into daydreams--hope takes flight.

I close my eyes and stretch to meet the wind,
imagining escape with feathered will.
I think of floating through a cloud serene,
and touching rain before it even falls.

Still, what about the mysteries beyond,
the moon, the stars and marvels yet to find?
An eagle sends no wish on comet's tail--
there's nothing thought beyond raw hunger's pull.

His flight's imprisoned in the world he's known.
In dreams, I sail beyond--your raptor child!
