INFORMATION
I have been writing since sixth grade, mostly short stories. Remember the old correspondence courses for writing novels? I enrolled in two, but never completed either one. Marriage, teaching, and children took over my writing life. Now that I'm retired, I'm into it full time and had the luck of winning several contests outside of FS and being published in small periodicals.

    robyn corum: Shari,
I had to take a minute and wish you my heartiest CONGRATULATIONS for your writing achievements in 2012: "#1- Top Ranked Script Writers 2012", -AND- "Top Ranked Short Works of 2012"!! WOW! That's a truly remarkable achievement!

I think I have some idea of how hard you have worked -- posting something almost every day - if not EVERY day. And I know that kind of momentum is almost impossible to maintain, and can be physically and mentally draining. You are an inspiration to many!

I always appreciate your honesty and insight, and I wish you only bigger and brighter things in 2013. Kudos!!

Spitfire: Thanks, robyn. You were one of my first friends on the site and helped me to navigate it. I appreciate that you noticed my short story ranking. Yes, I do neglect a lot of things in the spirit of writing. But I'd rather do that than anything else.

quicksandyamurray: I am truly grateful for all the long-standing and outstanding members that have taken the time to read and review my work. There is nothing like someone of the calibre of Spitfire or adewpearl (amongst many others)reviewing and giving you tips to help you along. It goes a long way with your success on this site and in the writing world. So, thank you so much to all those that have been here to encourage me, or correct me if needed.

Spitfire: Why do some viewers criticize a piece as too long and detailed, cliched, telling not showing-- and then still give it a five??
September 26 at 8:08PM
nor84: Not everyone will follow the rating system the way the site intended.
    September 26 at 8:15PM
Nick©: True... I got rated two stars once on a stand alone piece and was told that this "chapter" wasn't as good as the previous one...
    September 26 at 8:20PM
donaldww: I think the main reason is so the author will read the comments--even if they are critical--with an open mind, rather than drawing the shades due to anger or disappointment with the number of stars.

    September 26 at 8:25PM
nor84: And there are some reviewers who are afraid to hurt someone's feelings, which is sort of what donald said. How much kinder it is to try to help, to teach, when you know something needs work, than it would be to just paste on five stars and let the real world tell the writer about his problems with technique.
    September 26 at 8:46PM
redrider6612: Some people still get upset with 5 stars if the reviewer points out things that need work.
    September 26 at 9:19PM
William Walz: Give me a "six" or give me death.
    September 26 at 9:48PM
redrider6612: Ok, I need your address.
    September 26 at 10:06PM
darkvampdrake: I often give reviews like that because I always find a long list of stuff that needs to be edited, but I prefer to base the rating on the content and idea, unless the errors are too bothersome. Sometimes typos don't really detract from the story, and sometimes the story is excellent enough to override what small typos the writer may have made. Also, yes, I feel it does increase chances of not being snapped at in a reply.
    September 26 at 11:21PM
Spitfire: I share your philosophy, darkvamp. A good story should overlook a couple of typos. It's hard to catch them all. I don't mind fours as long as the advice is helpful.
    September 27 at 5:59PM
quicksandyamurray: I think it also depends on the experience of the reviewer. I am still new, less than a year, and a lot of writing seem like fives to me and I've not come to a position that would carry the same weight as a more accomplished writer would have. I have had a couple of times that brand spanking new members have given me a four or a two and said the piece was terrible and needed a lot of work. The same piece reviewed by more than one in the top twenty on the site had rated it five and had liked it and gave me constructive pointers. So, the rank and experience of the reviewer is what I take into consideration when reviewed. The other point is that it would not be wise to step on toes having just gotten on the site, so I think most, like myself, learn the rules and tact as they practice the art of reviewing. Should there be a class and a test to pass before being allowed to rate ones work perhaps. Therefore curbing the amateur reviews that take your rank down a peg or two with an unwarranted review. Just a thought.
