I always enjoy it when you stray from form into free verse. Your poem is both joyous and informative with- needless to say- an excellent use of rhyme. I have at least four poems describing their wings as stained glass which, come to think of it, May be the origin of their being named Monarch.

"They're spotted like leopards
of the air,
on the edge of their wings"
And below:
"On delicate wings of stained-glass mosaic,"

What a very lovely piece and your picture is priceless. I also enjoyed your notes. I know that the monarch is poisonous to other species and therefore is left alone. There are non-poisonous species that mimic the color of monarchs to protect themselves from predation.

I agree with you that watching butterflies is a good passtime. The monarch is my favorite. They share the job of pollination with bees and other insects. So their beautifully patterned wings and flitting flight creates beauty in their wide migratory movement.
