Very excellent! For some reason I could not see the photo attached. I enjoyed the story - ending and all, even though I was anticipating such. Thank you also for the explanation of the history of ventriloquism as well. Good poem . .you are quite talented.

Clever. Didn't see that ending coming. An excellent photo to accompany the written piece. Not a fan of puppets myself. Very interesting author's notes to accompany a poem that has a rhythm and a rhyme that changes up from "mocking to shocking," and seems to also pound out, (or pound into perhaps), the story with intensity. Great description that well enables the reader to see the story play out.

Well, your last line sold me. I always thought it would be pretty cool if the dummy controlled the ventriloquist...but that is what politicians are for. Seriously though, perfect tone throughout really understating the true situation, really only thinking something was up when the dummy is shown with tears in its eyes. The delivery of the final line is perfect. Now go watch Magic.

Hah, thank you, ravenblack. I know you don't give out "fluff" reviews, or part with sixes lightly, so I take this as the greatest compliment. You're right, there are many subtle, subliminal underpinnings and reasons why I chose to write this as I did. But, you've always been very astute in catching on.

    Thanks again, my friend!

I am thrilled to find such gems. This poem is scary in a soft and smooth way with an ending you could never imagine. But once you get there you are glad you stayed. I'm new to this site and reading( for the first time)Horror and Thriller Poetry. I've never come across this type of work before until fan story. The way this poem brings the reader deeper in until the horrible end is masterful. I loved this poem. P.S. That photo will haunt me tonight! Perfect choice.

Thanks, Petriesan, I really appreciate your review, my friend.

I don't know what circles you run it, but if I were to have just witnessed a performance given by a dead man with a ventriloquist's puppet hand shoved up his back, I myself would be pretty dang horrified, I assure you, lol...
reply by Petriesan on 23-Apr-2014
well, yeah . .I get your point, but that is more supernatural to me than horror. . .maybe just a definitional thing ?
reply by the author on 23-Apr-2014
Yeah, you might be right. I think horror comes in many different flavors. If something has the potential to horrify, then I personally classify it as horror. Although, that might just be me.

Excellent art work and words written.

Seeing ventriloquists perform I marvel at their skill.

This poem has a very sad ending and written very well.

Congratulations on winning this contest, Dean. You got my vote. I made a comment in the booth how much I loved the movie'Magic' with Anthony Hopkins and your poem is as eerie as the shivers the movie gave me. There were some great entries, but yours got me!

Thanks for your review as well as your support, Karyn. I sincerely appreciate both!

That movie is what inspired me to write the poem. I'd just finished watching old Fats dominate then take over control of poor Corky when I saw the prompt. 'H-m-m-m-mmmmm...', I thought. What if...

    Thanks so much again!

I enjoyed reading this horror poetry, first time I have reviewed a poem of this kind. I guess it is the dummy who performed for the ventriloquist Martin Periwinkle, and that's a little creepy. In my country though, ventriloquists are equated with comedy, for they usually put up a show that makes people laugh. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, nassus1957, I'm very pleased that the first poem of this type you chose to read and review was one of mine. I'm truly honored.

Ventriloquists have meant many different things here in the US. There have been movies, such as MAGIC, starring the indomitable actor, Anthony Hopkins, which have portrayed them in a less favorable light. Most recently, the horror film, DEAD SILENCE comes to mind.

Many people also have an unnatural fear of dolls and ventriloquist dummies, so I chose to attempt to prey on that fear as well.

Thanks again for read & reviewing my work. It's always a pleasure.
