Your line about the past casting a shadow on the present is so true. Great saying, "History leads the wise and drags the fool." Technically I found that your rhymes were neither forced, labored or strained and your rhythm flowed smoothly throughout your poem which made it easy for me to read your poem clearly. This is a perfectly formed ABAB rhyming poem. The rhyme is effortless throughout and doesn't ever seem forced, though due to the length of the lines, I agree it is best read aloud.
