Hi, Carolyn.
You have written such a beautiful cherished childhood story. You shared so well the way you worked toward saving for the blue dress. I'm sure you felt so proud every time you wore it, a dress treasured by your sister too. Your family sounds wonderful, your mother a very special and talented woman.
Wonderful story!
Bye
Rosalyne :)

She was the strongest of ladies.. She taught me to make much out of the little things in life, then you will have wonderfully big memories. I loved her so much. Thank you for this kind review. :-) Carolyn

This is an enjoyable story about your special blue dress. We've all had clothes that we loved and remember well. I can imagine the excitement of that parcel arriving.
These days clothes are so cheap. I think it's a pity, because life has become faster paced, and nobody knits jerseys anymore, because you can buy them cheaper.

You are right, although I alter my husbands pants (most pants have to be shortened) so I still use my sewing machine pretty often. And occasionally I make something for the granddaughters. (or their dolls) Thanks for this great review. :-) Carolyn

You brought back such memories here-the big catalogues, the use for paper dolls and outhouse. LOL. My mother sewed all our clothes too (just my sister and me) but outrivaled anything I saw in the department stores. Sis resented that she always got hand-me-downs. Then she grew taller than I.
Sigh...A lovely nostalgic write.

Hi Carolyn,

I enjoyed reading your true story. It must have been fun having so many brothers and sisters. I was an only child and hated it. I got my cousins hand me downs.

My husband is an only child. When we married I am not sure what made him happiest, me or getting the big family. Thank you Kat for this lovely review. :-) Carolyn

I am surprised. You as good in prose as you are in poetry.
The drift here is so smooth and I like the details. They are not unfamiliar to me.
I went through that kind of life as well .there were thirteen children in my family. Seven sisters and six brothers.
As you said..to be exact.

Thank you for the good wishes.i need them.
I have hardly had any in this life. But as writing and meditation were my past time,I combine them
I would not have had the money to publish them.
God is great.

For some reason it makes me happy to know you relate to Blue. I understand about the lack of money to publish. Maybe someday I will be as fortunate as you. I can hardly wait for your publication. It inspires me to know that you are doing well.
Thank you for your wonderful words of encouragement and this great review. God is great and good, :-) Carolyn

I can't say enough about [Mother's] skills

puffed-sleeves /lose the hyphen

store-bought dress/ add hyphen

cost Two/two dollars and ninety nine cents.

We were a large family too of 7. Our clothes were not store-bought, but tailored. I really cannot remember whether they were handed down. But, I married at a time when imported items were banned and the country was put through a trying time. People were having a tough time to feed and clothe their families. Fortunately for me my children were born much later and we did not have to struggle as much except in getting enough infant formula as this was restricted. I had traders known to me who would reserve enough stocks for me. That way I was quite lucky. I don't know how I would have managed otherwise.

I enjoyed reading your article and found similarities prevailing here. I remember these catalogs very well along with other fashion magazines.
Cheers
Sylvia

Sylvia, what a great review. I loved hearing of your families trials as well. I count myself fortunate indeed to have had the humble background, it makes me appreciate what I have.
Thanks also for the edits. I will fix. :-) Love, Have a great week. Carolyn

My father was a very strict man and isolated us on the estate. Did not let us lose our values. My Mother on the other hand was an only child and had money to burn. He did not allow her to spoil us. So she spent her money to uplift needy families. We were not aware of her work till after she passed on. This upbringing put sense into our heads and we became independent. His one advice to me was don't live on past glories, make your own, and that's how I live my life.

This is a wonderful, warm, simple but charming story. I also remember poring through catalogs and making wish lists.
You clearly paint a picture of a different time and an almost different world, at least for so many young people today who have no idea about hand-me-downs.
Nice story, skillfully told. Good job.

Small nits:
I can't say enough about Mothers skills.. Make Mother's possessive with an apostrophe.
puffed-sleeves You don't need the - here, just puffed sleeves is fine.
But here store bought dress you do need a hyphen: store-bought dress.
You don't need to capitalize the word two: The dress cost Two dollars and ninety-nine cents.

Carolyn, your delightful story mirrors my own growing up years. Women of that generation were wicked seamstresses. My mom would take the clothes given to us 5 girls and tailor them to fit us and stay up till 3 am sewing Easter dresses. She even made under ware for our dolls! My only brother got his firsthand. Our moms sacrificed a lot for us kids. We remember them with great admiration. You have honored your mom. :0 GracieAnn

What sweet comments. I love it that so many on FS had similar backgrounds. It tightens our 'community' even more. I have so many stories about home-made underwear. LOL Mother lived to almost 98 and had such a sharp mind. I loved her dearly as it sounds like you did your own. Have a great Sunday, :-) Carolyn
