Sometimes it takes seeing something like this to put our own life in perspective. You've become the guardian angle this woman needs in her life. This is a wonderful story that shows what a caring person you are. I'm glad to know that someone cares about her and is willing help it whatever way she will allow. It is good that Mexico at least has temperatures that won't cause her to freeze to death.

No, we seldom have winters like up north. I thank you for your kind and generous review and the awesome 6 stars. I sincerely appreciate them

Smurph,

This is such a sad tale. My heart pains for this woman, and I want to reach out and help her. I feel guilty in my warm house with food aplenty, and closets crammed full of clothes. It is unbelievable that no shelter exists to care for the homeless. It is interesting the woman is too proud to accept money from you, but is okay with taking the food and cane from an unknown stranger.

As always, this is very well written. Your descriptions paint a vivid picture, albeit sad, of this woman and her troubles. Nicely done.

Suzanne

Mexicans are a proud people and older women are especially proud. To take charity is painful and I respect her wish not to be imposed upon.

Very well told, Sasha.

You have vividly described the harsh reality of life for too many. I was uplifted to read of your efforts to ease your neighbor's burden.

You have reminded me of how important it is to help the person in need who is in front of us. If everyone did that, the world would change.

Hugs, your fan, d

You are so right, what a difference it would make if everyone just helped one person. It truly would change the whole world for the better.

You told the story of the old woman very well. It is incredible to see her independence in her poverty, so proud yet so poor. You made me feel very happy when I knew you were putting out food for her, and the stick etc. Giddy

She does seem like a proud woman and I do feel guilty watching her but I worry about her and need to know she has made it home--so to speak, and has something to eat. Certainly gives me reason to be thankful for what I have which is so much more. Bless you for the awesome 6 stars, I sincerely appreciate them.

What a story Smurph and how wonderful it is that you are helping out this woman. Sigh who knows what her life has been all about or how she ended up on the streets. You are wonderful.

It is very sad to see the elderly, and actually unusual. There is great respect for the elderly here and the children almost always care for them. This woman must not have children nearby or no children at all.
reply by Gungalo on 14-Oct-2013
Yes that's it but surely there is a shelter where she could go?
reply by the author on 14-Oct-2013
There are no shelters in Mazatalan, sad but true. There are few social services for them either. Mexico has a long way to go to catch up in that area.

    Gosh I guess so. Sigh.

Everyone in spite of their status in life should be treated with respect. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very good read.

Your post touched my heart. We are all guilty of whining when we should celebrate all we have. I will pray for that woman. You did a great job writing this.

I am not a religious person, but I went to church yesterday and prayed for her. I cannot imagine having to live like that and be so alone. Thanks you for you kind words and generous 6 stars. I sincerely appreciate it.

This is a beautifully written sensitive and heart breaking snapshot of a picture outside your window.

At the same time is is heart warming to know that at least one human being saw her and took notice of her simple needs.

I feel guilty watching her but I am so concerned for her that I cannot not look. The poverty here is heart wrenching and it is impossible to help them all. Thank you so much for the precious 6 stars. I sincerely appreciate them.

Thanks for catching the spags. I always appreciate it. It is sometimes so hard to see the conditions of the poor and I do try to do what I can but it just doesn't seem to be enough.
reply by adewpearl on 14-Oct-2013
No one person can do it all. There was a time a couple decades ago that I was feeling burnt out as a volunteer and activist because I worried I couldn't fix everything. Then, after listening to a speaker at a retreat, I realized I can do something. And I just have to have faith that someone like you is doing something in another place and someone in a third location is doing something there and so on and so on. :-)

No, it is impossible to fix everything, but if everyone just helped one person, the world would be a better place.

This was a very interesting short story to read, which held my attention all the way through, about the author helping out a poor homeless woman.

I am surrounded by so much poverty that it is not unusual to see someone sleeping on the streets. Sad, but all too true.
reply by denhagan on 15-Oct-2013
That would have to hard. I'm glad that you're able to help out some. Take care,
