Beautifully written, Smurphy, and so sad. It would be very interesting to know where she goes during the day. She will probably die in some dark corner some day, and people will still keep walking right past her. Seeings you did approach her one day, do you think she suspects that it is you leaving things for her? You would think some of the very rich would set up food kitchens like they have here in the States. Love the story, and you did a wonderful job writing it. You should make up a book of short stories of all you adventures down there, including the crazy woman who lived upstairs. lol. Well, worth a six, my friend, and it's good to see your still OK. How are YOU doing? :)shawn

I suspect she has some mental illness so it is unlikely she suspects that I am the one who left her the items. She still comes back every night and I do what I can to make sure she has something to eat. Yes, there are many wealthy people here but I doubt they would consider a shelter of food program for the poor. It is a sad situation but many of the average people do what they can for the poor and homeless. I'll PM you.

Your description of the homeless woman created the necessary pain and sympathy for the woman and lets the reader know you share these feelings also. By realizing how much more you have than this woman will ever have gives you the ability to share what you have with her and that is the best thing to share with your readers. Great job. You've not only counted your blessings but have shared them also!

I really enjoyed your piece of writing. It was very sad to read. I could tell it was written from the heart of a very caring person indeed. Your writing I thought was very descriptive and I could almost see that poor lady in my minds eye. I definitely picked up the emotions that you were portraying.
Unfortunately even in today's society, this problem of homelessness continues whether it be in a rich country or a very poor one. We should all aim to help people who are less fortunate than ourselves.
You should be very proud of yourself for writing such a good and thought provoking piece of writing! Well Done :-) xxx

It's a sobering situation, and I'm honestly grateful for the perspective. There are many sleeping rough in London and I pass several each morning on the way to work, but they are rich compared to the lady you speak of - the sheer volume of daily commuters ensures they get clothes and food left for them.

I'll have to read a poem about kittens or something now :-).

Thanks for being a good role model and reminding us to count our blessings. The weather in Southern California turned warm again too, plus windy which plays havoc with our allergies, but it's still so much better than the blizzards or typhoons in other regions. I admired your description in the opening paragraph of the sun's overbearingness. Your character study of the ancient, proud woman with her precious, plastic bags is riveting. Hugs- Joan

It's a shame that anyone has to be homeless. I was in New York one year a long time ago and saw some of the homeless people. I should give thanks more often. I have all I need and more. Nice little story, Sasha. Miss Sally

Yes, we have just had our Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada, and I realized, while giving thanks, how blessedly fortunate we are. It is so easy to forget and take things for granted.
This is a wonderful piece of writing, you paint a picture with your words. Thank-you for sharing. :) Sandra

I liked reading your story. It was easy to imagine the scene, well described, giving it just the right atmosphere.
There's a bit of repetition with the watching from the window, maybe you can change that up a bit?
A couple other points I found:
-homeless woman that has.. - woman who has..

-is what she prefers -seems to prefer? Can't know what the woman is thinking.

-is hard, (comma)but part of life..

I have a good friend from Mexico, from Ensenada. I appreciate your efforts in pointing out the conditions in that country.
Thanks for sharing.
:) Tessa

Yes, we need to focus on all the good feelings each of us has. This lady teaches us to focus on the positive parts of our lives,I call these people "earth angels" because they teach me so much about what is truly important in life. I enjoyed reading this story.

Sasha, this is a sincere, moving and deeply human piece of writing. You are absolutely right: we should spend less time whining about our lot in life. I hope your lady stays with you for a long time.
