Wow, Dean... your melancholy flows through unhindered on this piece. Or maybe, it just reflects and amplifies my own sense of melancholy, and everyone else's. I feel the same way after watching/hearing the news. I used to watch the nightly news, but have not done so in many years. I stopped right after 9/11. But, it's not like you can avoid hearing things, hide from reality... the sadness often permeates our existence... maybe we all share/feel some sort of unspoken Universal sadness, the collective conscious of a world in pain.
That said... I truly think that what we try to do here... the acts of creation we, and countless others in our world, strive for... I think that "creation" is LOVE in its purest form... I think our world's future depends upon it, and that what "we" do... writing poetry, painting, playing music, sculpting out of clay, creating and raising new life... these are the things that will bring balance back to our world. It must be so - because these are the most hopeful things I can think of to do.
So, I must give your work my first "6" of the week - not often a poem can elicit such strong thoughts from me.

The writer uses the aabb rhyme scheme effectively. The rhyming is solid. The flow is smooth. The syllable count is consistent as this piece grabs my attention from the beginning and holds it to the end. Good job.

You definitely hit a chord with this. I was asking my son the other day about the impending war in Syria. He's a medic in the Army. I asked hi if his guys were scared they were gong to be sent in to Syria, so soon after getting home from Afghanistan. He said" We can't think like that. This is what we do. It's just another destination to keep the peace." They don't believe it's war. It's keeping the peace. Kind of sad, really.

He's right, Gretchen. As an ex US Marine, I can understand where he's coming from. He has a job to do, and he'll go do his duty, no matter where he's called to perform it. That's the honor, duty, integrity and job of a true soldier, and I have to commend him for saying so...

A very good summing up of the life that's lived today. Of course, we are bombarded with a lot more of the news because of today's technology. We see what's going on everywhere in the world. Bad things have always happened, there has always been wars, there has always been hunger, it's simply that it is so graphically displayed today. And again with advanced technology horrible damage can be inflicted in an unpresendated way. It seems the human race has lost the plot. A good read. Thank you. Dorothy

Homeless lie dying--cold in the street,
babies with not enough food to eat,
children with mom, however, no dad...
Where is the happiness we once had?
Your poem is amazing , that picture turned my head upside down, your words vanished into my heart, life has become a hell of a life.
Lovely Dean, loved this morning poem. Bless u Terry

solid rhyming couplets
man kind - mankind
You convey your emotions about the state of the world and humankind with honest intensity and good illustrative examples though I believe some of the things on your list have improved since we were young, like programs to feed hungry children
Your poem is beautifully presented Brooke :-)
