Hi Barbara:)
Paige is getting a close up look at the remains of social injustice that seem to linger on in pockets of the old south. The real problem is that rule and laws can't change the mindsets of people who, as small children, observed and learned the social actions of past generations.

The truth is that real change only comes from either a true change of heart or , more usual, the death of the old guard.

Cash and Billy Joe saw the talent of a black football player help effect real change. This happened at The University of Texas when Earl Campbell's great talent allowed blacks to play with white players for the first time at a Texas University. I saw it at the University of Oklahoma when Prentiss Gault became the first black player at a major southern white school when he signed to play at the University of Oklahoma. This gives an authentic feel to your story.

Now I wonder how Dr. Walker will be handled. Nala is obviously a better peson than that sleazy bigot.

Keep up the good writing. Love and more Irish Hugs,

Roger

I remember when the Selmon brothers played for OKlahoma. I may have spelled their last name wrong. Thank you for the kind review.

    Hi Barbara,
My roommate, Richard McKeever, and I taught chemistry at The University of Oklahoma for seven years. Prentiss Gault was in Richard's class and I got to know him quite well. He was both a great football player and a good student. I was talking to Richard, just last week and although in 1957, racial prejudice was quite prevalent in Oklahoma neither of us remember any problems at OU. I gues being an All American fullback outweighed prejudice.

I am sure it is. I had a friend from Germany. She is white, German, and her husband was a black GI. They were stationed here at Fort Hood in the late '80's and early '90's. They came across all sorts of racial issues here. I see very little here now.

Barbara - you have the emotions going on this one. I often write about racism in the South. No doubt it exists, and still there is love between races. So ironic, so Southern. I'm enjoying your posts as always. Bill

Hmm, the mysteries deepen. I'm glad Paige has such decent folks as friends. Looks like she's going to be needing them to stay close by. An excellent, barbara.

Warmest regards, Bev

I wondered the same thing. How would he know about things if he hadn't asked someone to keep him informed. A great chapter. WEll done.

I asked how he knew(,) and he said somebody

Lingering Southern attitudes to race is a very sensitive subject for a writer to tackle, and you've done it here with great tact and common sense. Well done.

Good chapter, Barbara. I had originally noted this word, but after looking at it again, I realize it could be either way: "Remember what you did to the wide receivers' (receiver's) coach.

He kept bad(-)mouthing your running back because he was black?"

I was wondering about the bad-mouthing, but wasn't sure because of the ing ending. Thank you for the kind review.
reply by mumsyone on 18-Feb-2013
According to the dictionary, it can be either badmouthing or bad-mouthing.

Hi Barbara,

I really do not like people like this Doctor Walker. We all have our prejudices, but creeps like this take it way to far. Now I'm being prejudiced ...

Good chapter, I'm beginning to suspect this Walker character might be using a 'private' entrance to spy on Paige.

I almost missed a chapter. Had to go back and read the previous chapter first. I like your characters more and more with each chapter, well, with exception of this Walker fella. Your writing is flawless. Keep em coming.

This is a powerful chapter which speaks volumes about racism which still exists despite the number of people who would like to say it doesn't. It also shows that not everyone sees peoples' colour, but rather sees them as individuals, despite their colour.
Thank you for bringing these social injustices to light.
Great work!

What a terrible thing for Dr Walker to
say - such ignorance -- altho I know
such still goes on today in some
places.

This was perfectly presented, Barbara, and if able to give another six, I would do so. Always a pleasure to read your work.

Margaret
