What a terrific story!
I read this and was swept away completely, forgetting all about the spuds boiling over.
An absolutely wonderful heart felt story, funny, sad, clever,
and above all fabulously written.
Kindest regards Trimple

You see, Lee... this is what I mean. You take a grumpy, bumpy crotchety old man with the best grumpy language I've ever heard. He knocks kids, cats, barbeques, cul-de-sacs and neighbors... and then the next thing I know there's an old, old female cat, a young male tom cat... a ghostly voice of a love don't die... and BAM!... I'm in to the middle of a great love story with jest 'bout the mostest powerful message one's gonna get this side of hearts and flowers...
My gifted writer friend... I consider it a privilege to call you friend.

Thank you, greg. I do do a little venting before the story gets going, don't I? It's hard to edit out lines I think are funny. Besides, I can always plead 'character development'.
I'm really glad you enjoyed, friend.
Peace, Lee

The venting, Lee, is totally in character with your character and reading him was a pleasure worth savoring... when an old man like that finds love and struggles to incorporate that into his 'crotchety' is a joy to read...
Ever onward, ever upward, ever GPS

Ah, the ending! Well done, what a grabber. You do such a wonderful job at creating and maintaining a consistent voice for Sherwood. His descriptions are great and really bring this story to life. I found the dialogue to be believable and authentic and the repetition of certain things really honed in on the message of love and the characterization of Sherwood. I don't feel comfortable calling Sher, seems like that would be reserved for Edie. Really enjoyed this read.

Thank you, ZBaron. I'm delighted with your review. Sherwood (even I'm not allowed to call him Sher) was a lot of fun to imagine and write. I'm glad you enjoyed. Peace, Lee

Oh, gee! Where do I begin. You had me laughing and almost made my cry and I'm not sure why. This is the best Valentine I have ever read. It was an overwhelming read just for its emotional content. I enjoyed this thoroughly. A wonderful, wonderful write. Thanks for sharing...

I've read a slew of mush for Valentine's Day but none ... and I honestly mean none ... Got me in all the right places as your multi-layered love story. You went down a different path with this one, hw, but you sure weren't lost on this adventure.
What incredible talent you have ... I fell in love with Sher in the first three paragraphs, but I've always had a soft spot for curmudgeons. So many great lines and phrases and metaphors. What a master you are combining just the right amount of gush and crank. The love between Sherwood and his ghostly Edie is a love any romantic would long for.
Loved your Yellow Man and his Butter Pecan ...sweet nuts.
"wanted the bringing" ... The best line in a love story--hell in any story--I've read in a long time. We all want the bringing, LeeMan.
I've been saving this hw gold star for this story, but it deserves a galaxy. Ya did so damn good but a love story is another character story and no one does character better than you. I'm delighted you wrote this and best of luck in the contest.
Smiles,
Indy : )

Thank you so much, Indy. 'Gush and crank'--I really like that. And yes, curmudgeons seem to come natuarally to me. Can't figure why.
As you know this is my usual genre--not a cowboy or criminal in sight, unless you count Yellow Man.
Thank you for this great review. Sometimes it's a special pleasure to read.
Peace, Lee

You sneaky devil! I could swear I heard you admit once or twice that you really weren't a cat hater - so glad to hear it again in your notes, which I didn't bother to read until I'd finished the my romp through the tales here.
So glad you were an Edie lover - if she whispers sweet wisdom in your ears, even in your imagination, she is awesome.
Really - love your story. This one feels a little Parkerish/Spenserie. I kept waiting for the next glib yet full of depth remark to surface and raise an eyebrow, or at tickle through my ear hairs. I read out-loud in my head, so I can actually hear the words and add my own subtle emphasis. OK?
Details? Way to many to mention. Methussluh's Bris... caught the scrap? Sher, that e-mail went out... Lickin Butter Pecan? My-My, what great inuendos and insinuations.
And, as always, the best dialog - even when there's only one real person talking.
Bravo, friend. I love it.

Thank you, Judy. My father was a cat hater, so I needed a long-ago girlfriend to help me get over my distrust of cats. I guess I drew from that expericence in this story. But Princess really does live across the street from me, and she really is being courted through the glass door by a scraggily stray I call Yellow Man. I just layered one love story on top of another.
Thanks for catching 'Methusela's scrap'--wait, that wasn't what I meant. You know what I mean.
Peace, Lee

Yes, I do know what you mean. Layering love stories - nice thought, and added a lot to the story. And, my Dad was a cat hater too, until he met my Prinz! Always a pleasure to read your great writes. Judy

Like your author notes. Glad you told us that Princess and Yellow Man are actually cats. the Hallmark visual was great to use.
LOL at this line: Tuna! Solid Albacore, too. For I am not a yuppie but I have given albacore tuna to outdoor cats before. Just a bleeding heart.
Blessings, JO

Thank you, Jo. Anyone who feeds stray cats is okay in my book--even if I am a curmudgeon. Glad you liked the story. Peace, Lee

Great story and very well written--could find no typos or spags needing attention. Very humorous, as usual, and grumpily touching. Great job. Luck with the contest.

You had me laughing from beginning to end with this precious, delightful and oh, so clever love story. Only you could turn a hatred (albeit, fake) of cats into a love story. And you did a marvelous job with it too. Definitely a 6 star story. Great entry for the contest and I wish you all the best "Sher".

Ah, Sasha, except for being a curmudgeon and feeding hungry cats, I'm nothing at all like Sherwood.
But I did get a thrill when you called me 'Sher'.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the story, and thanks for the well wishes.
Peace, Lee

Well, your cat and mouse tale of love was a perfect way to celebrate love, and romance this month. A man's love for a woman does live on after one says adieu. That's not debatable in my book. I don't like cats, but I love Edie mentality goes a long way to explain, in a humorous way, a man's love for a woman. It's as simple as expensive tuna on a plate.
