i really am glad i ran across this and will return to its instruction and wisdom for future 'meditation' there is a lot to take in and i think i'll have to do so in waves, keep coming back to it. The writing was crisp and to the point, and very focused on it's objective of giving great insights and did so very thoroughly

There are people who can't listen because they can't stop talking--my mother, for instance
Toss below 25 seem to have a great deal of difficulty in verbal communication as the text, chat, tweet etc rather
than face to face interaction.
Honest self-communication takes a while for most of us to learn. We get too hung up on what others think about us, to learn to figure what we truly think inside. A great write my friend. Thank you so much fo sharing~Debbie

Yet to me, using common sense means that I do things in a practical manner that allows me to do them right the first time, with minimal expenditure of resources. Maybe the difference is you would say sharing a common sense and I would say having common sense. Food for thought.
I don't have much to say style-wise, other than I wouldn't have waited until the 14th paragraph to say "Now, to the reason for communication." Given your title, I would have expected to see it sooner. Not wrong, just a difference in style.

Daily routines are ingrained in us as "best known practices" or "applications" to achieve a specific objective - habits, if you will. They execute automatically without sensing. The Common Sense we all use is the feeling of what is true and what isn't. Thank you for your review...John

Interesting chapter and well researched. I must say I did learn a thing or two about the human ability to communicate. The Helen Keller segment was a great refresher about the wondrous ability of the human spirit.
I did though, however, find this statement a bit tough to swallow: "The heart is just another body organ to be monitored by the brain. All emotion is found in the right hemisphere and all decisions are made by emotion."
According to the Bible, authored by the Creator of Man who knows our physical, emotional and spiritual makeup better than we do ourselves, we learn this at Jeremiah 17:9, "The heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate. Who can know it?"
So to say "the heart is merely an organ" would be inaccurate. The heart is the seat of emotion. It is what motivates us to seek the thrill of a roller coaster ride while the common sense of the brain warns of the danger.
Enjoyed reading this piece, though, Cogitator. You do have a logical argument, but in regards to the heart, you missed a beat. ;) Chrisfiore

I do not denigrate anyone's beliefs and values. We can pick and choose to live our lives as we wish. I graduated from religion many years ago. It is a proven truth that our emotional responses are governed by our right hemisphere. The thrill is what makes our heart beat faster, but it doesn't generate emotion. Thank for the review...John

Of course not, John. We choose to differ, that's all. Believe me, I am no Bible thumper, I just know what holds true.
When the Bible says, "God felt pain in his heart because the Earth had been ruined by Man", it shows the depth of the emotion, not just the logical, topical reasoning of the brain.
If you have "graduated" from religion, I suspect that means you no longer govern yourself accordingly, and that is fine. But it doesn't discredit the accuracy of the Bible. Man has been trying to do that for 2000 years. ;)

This is all very deep and engaging, cog. Some claim that others do not listen. You give us a way to understand the lack of 'listening' as a lack of communication, where the message sent is not clear enough to be understood by the receiver; the hardest of all communications obstacles to overcome. This well written article may for a basis for attacking the problem.

This is all very deep and engaging, cog. Some claim that others do not listen. You give us a way to understand the lack of 'listening' as a lack of communication, where the message sent is not clear enough to be understood by the receiver; the hardest of all communications obstacles to overcome. Good attention grabbing introduction that starts with a quote and define the word communication. Personally, I love any type of work in which I can learn something. The transition is smooth. The delivery is good. The message is clear. I enjoyed reading this. Thanks for sharing.

You give so much for the reader to think about with this chapter, John. It's always amazed me that our senses can be the foundation of how we receive and send communication, but they sure can be an obstacle in too many attempts at communication. Great chapter, John .

Another good chapter John. I have found that the average person does not LISTEN ... the hear what they want to, and take from it what suits them best. To truly listen and remember what the other person said would be a good step in the right direction. We all have an inbred common sense and an instinctual sense as well, yet many choose to ignore both on a regular basis ... here again to suit their own needs. Each of our perceptions of reality is so different on so many levels!! A smart, piece for one to cogitate over. I look forward to your next chapter. In the starting sentence of your second paragraph, I think I'd remove "English". Just a thought. excellent post as usual
