I really enjoyed this flash fiction writing. It started out slow and calmly, as any typical family with children more than half grown. The knock on the door...of course there was something coming here. The letter from the mother was sad but predictable. However, you wrote it out beautifully how the grandfather of the young boy reacted, and the reader would know that their lives would change for good, forever. Joan

I love the letter, and I love the story - that sure was one important letter. Great dialogue, all very natural sounding, excellent character development and interactions among characters that make them seem like a real family. And I just love the story :-) Brooke

What a way to touch a heart. This was beautiful. I loved the way you started out with such an every day setting and then eased into both the trajedy and the blessing.
My husband and I have never experienced the loss of a child. We are, however, raising two of our grandchildren and have for most of their lives. We are very well acquainted with that blessed extra setting at the table.
You did an excellent job of writing all of that into this feel good story.
