Eeeew! But a wonderful piece of writing. You did an excellent job of telling the story through the eyes of someone so young.

The title called my attention. I just read an article last week about customized coffins, rich people on cars simulating coffins. Your story is very well written.

A well-written piece based on a fact I knew nothing about! Now I want to research it. Whether intended or not, I loved the humor of Uncle Sawyer's name. Outstanding use of voice. Details of making the coffins, descriptions of people drowned or lost all make this came to life. A nice touch-counting the holes in the strip of leather--makes your character even more real. And the father's crying! The emphasis on eating all his beans, The thought of having to burn all those bodies. This is a piece worthy of a prize. Enter it in a flash fiction contest, my dear.

Thanks. And yes, Sawyer was intended. I didn't know how many would know or cathc it. I wanted the leather holes to seem like they represented the lives lost like stars in heaven - don't know if that came across. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I may enter it in a contest, after all. *smile*

This was a very good recounting of a storm that happened in 1928. You told the story with deep accuracy. There was no spag that I could find.

Oh, my, this was a tragic story for sure. I felt for all the families there that lost their loved ones, and the coffin maker had his hands full. So sad. Such a well told story!

Thanks, Linda. It was heart felt. Such a tragic tale. Truth is stranger and more terrifying than fiction!
