All alone

He was a cowboy

by Willie P. Smith

He was a cowboy, that's all he knew,
He was well known but just by a few.

Living with Grandpa, his parents now gone,
He and Grandpa lived alone.

Grandpa was old and in poor health,
Most of the ranching he did himself.

At a very young age, with time passing fast,
He was looking toward the future, he had a hard past.

He roped many steers and pulled them to the fire,
They were not his cattle, he worked for hire.

When it came to hard labor, He didn't shirk.
Everyone knew he died from hard work.

Time went by and Grandpa passed away,
He knew it would happen, just waiting for the day.

At Grandpa's funeral, He prayed to God above,
When Grandpa arrives, give him my love.

He should have married but didn't have the time,
He lived by himself, with nary a dime.

Many years later, he too passed while alone,
Friends had this carved in stone.

"He was a good cowboy, that's all he knew,
He was well known but just by a few."

Now he's back with Grandpa, they've found a new home
No more worry about being alone.
