The winds of war

Cold Wind Blowing

by Aussie

A cold, salt-laden wind
Wind blowing at Gallipoli
Gallipoli, our men slaughtered
Slaughtered on the beach

Beach, now silent, waves still
Still, we remember the time
Time and tides of war
War that took our men

Men, no they were boys
Boys hungry for excitement
Excitement in foreign country
Country of an enemy, waiting

Waiting on the clifftops, laughing
Laughing at our men on the beach
Beach ran with blood, guns
Guns killing Aussies from above

Above the beach the young Turks
Turks just as scared as our boys
Boys slaughtered yesterday
Yesterday is remembered today

Today, we wait in silent prayer
Prayer for those who gave
Gave their lives for freedom
Freedom for all countries

Countries at war once more
More killing, anger, and hate
Hate grows in all men not love
Love of fellow man has waned

Waned over the century
Century of wars still pulsing
Pulsing like a heartbeat
Heartbeat has become like stone

Stone hearts across the waves
Waves of nauseating murder
Murder of a fellow man easy
Easy with a bought gun

Gun in every home, terror
Terror strikes at the innocent
Innocent run for their lives
Lives become prisoners

Prisoners of hate like soldiers
Soldiers knew their fate
Fate of the innocent, death
Death means life with God.

Quatrains in Loop style poetry (non-rhyming.) Next week 25 th April we pray for all the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.
Soldiers were paid four bob a week = 4 shillings in the old money or US nowadays = 40 C. My Father fought in New Guinea and sent his pay home. Over 4 years, he accumulated 1,000 pounds to buy a War Service Home. My, haven't times changed.
The soldiers lived on bully beef (like Spam) a disgraceful thought. When they ran out of food they slaughtered a donkey.
Pays one point and 2 member cents (and maybe more).
