What a battle to be a commanche wife, the beatings, the branding but the snake that really topped it off. Is that all your imagination Thomas. Poor Sarah, hoped for so much when she set out.Well told Thomas,

The torture of Sarah is based on an actual event that I read about when I was n my teens. I never forgot it.

No you wouldn't, make =s this even more powerful reading knowing that actually happened.thanks for letting me know.

Wow, this was rough stuff. I know that the Native peoples had some gruesome rituals, but the snake ordeal beats them all.
I just reviewed what I see now was an earlier chapter where Sarah is anxious to start their trek west. It sounds like things went very horribly wrong for her.
Harrowing Stuff!

The story of Sarah's torture is based on a true incident I read years ago.

Wow, even more disturbing.

Thomas,
OMS. I was not expecting that. Now what happens to your story? I thought this was a novel... Here I was, engrossed in this story and you've killed off ever character except this new person. Okay... Let's see what you're going to do next.
BTW, I NEVER said the STORY was funny. You misunderstood me.

Wow, you sure took this one in a direction I didn't see coming, and I'm anxious to see where you can take the continuing story from here, beyond such a climax. Great job! :-)

In the first chapter, I said this is a story about one man's journey west. This was his introduction. Now he takes over.
-
Now, I know. I wish I had the time to go back and catch up what I missed, but I'm sure somewhere along the way I might be able to read the first few chapters. :-)

She is a good woman. We did this to her.(")
My goodness that was vicious - and the snake - ugh!!
It's no wonder the poor woman went insane...
and altho it was a shock to read she was shot dead,
it was the best thing to end her torture and misery.
great story, Thomas.

Comment from CD Richards
I find the content both disturbing and depressing, for several reasons. That said, the writing is extremely good. The brutality of the treatment Sarah received is enforced by the sharp, matter of fact language.
Then, as now, more people than we would like, from all walks of life, are savages.
Nice work.

Goodness, this was hard. Poor Sarah. This is one of the reasons I maintain that we shouldn't look at other people and cultures with our own spectacles. What good and acceptable for one may be quite the opposite for another. Forcing one's "ways" on another does send that person straight to madness or a permanent psychological damage that's hard to shake off without professional assistance.
I wondered why Sarah hadn't thought of taking her own life, her faith notwithstanding. I also wondered why she hadn't (I assume) known what was in store for her - she'd lived with the Comanche long enough to have witnessed it, surely?
I'm intrigued at what the next chapter will be about. Great, clean writing, as always.

Thomas, I had another post from you in my inbox, but when I tried to click on it to open and read, it said it had been removed.
What happened, did you do something to upset Mr Ens?
Comment from Bill Schott
Well, that was unexpected. I figured she'd had some life left in her as she seemed to be the main character here. I'm not sure how our narrator knew how Sarah got to be crazy, since he had only just met her before ventilating her baked gourd. Guess I'll read the next frame.

We learn how he knew about Sarah in the next chapter.

I can see the beating and the branding, but the snake thing? Is this really what they do? This guy that finds her, doesn't try to help her? Just a bullet to the brain. Really? I was really enjoying this story, until this point.

I enjoyed reading this story. It made me feel sorry for Sarah and her unfortunate ordeal. I was hoping so much that she had survived. Very enraging, well written and well done.
