Having experienced much the same feelings when visiting Venice, I can relate to the experience. The essay opened very well but (always the but) the third paragraph did very little to move the essay along. Try reading with that paragraph missing. I first rated this a four star, reread a couple of times though maybe I'm being a bit ...well whatever.
Like this very much. Some good writing here.

Wow, this was posted in 2012. Though I appreciate all feedback, it's not likely I will do editing on work that is dormant.
Your comments on newer works would certainly be appreciated.

Good god, woman. This is amazing.
I've just come off writing two 800 word articles for the Wellington Advertiser - one on DIY wine-making and the other on a garden centre - neither one exactly squealing YAHOO in my brain...
...and then I pull this gem up.
It's yet another facet of your vision. Like that wee diamond we were talking about. This one turned toward the sun and flashed its reflection at me.
Quite stunning work, and I know exactly what you mean. I'm not sure myself if it's the art that moves us, or the fact that a human created it. And so long ago. For me, that is the most amazing thing. And to work so close yet to get it so darn perfect.
It's quite miraculous and extremely inspiring.
I only found one tiny misplaced brushstroke which in no way detracts from what you've written.
I love this.

Essays were always my first love. Never actually thought I could come up with an original thought for fiction. How did you get that job writing for local papers?
-
I used to write for the Guelph Tribune. We actually placed an ad, and the then sales manager said they were looking for a writer. So I tried out and got the job. I quit for a while, then one of the guys I worked for got a job at the Advertiser and phoned me to see if I'd do some stuff, and I said yes. :o)

This really put me there. I'd love to be able to travel more and get out of the states. It must have made Hemingway a better writer and many others. Nice touch with with a balance of emotional stages that you took me through. "Thinning marble from millions of souls", says much with with few words too.

If you get to Venice there is a restaurant where Hemmingway apperntly frequented called Harry's Bar. There suppossed to be another in NY but the man's picture is on the wall just off the square. Now be careful as there were only three of us for LUNCH. We each had a pasta dish, a ingle glass of wine and a latte and the astonishing bill was $320 US dollars and that was when the exhange rate was 1.50...memorable!

I really enjoyed this one. I agree with your statement:
anything that opens up our senses and stirs an emotion is art...
And I especially like the idea of tomorrow being our personal blank canvas just waiting for inspiration.
Very nice work with this one and a great entry for this contest. I sincerely wish you all the best.

And you? How many canvasses remain blank in your island of serenity? I'm always happy to hear from you and mention you to Delores, my ambassador to God.
-
I am still a long way from being back to my usual chipper self. All my friends are on vacation and I feel abandoned...lol The weather is very hot outside which makes going for a walk an effort. My canvases will probably remain blank until I fully recover.

You just proved that what opens our heart is also the trigger that gives us our perspective. I have always believed that everyone is an artist in their own special way. Sometimes it just takes someone else to show them, as I am sure you have done with this worthwhile essay. This was loaded with subtle peeks into exploding perceptions.

Well written and expressed. Soft caresses of words and godliness offer a gentle reflection on the role of art and artistry. Nice piece.

Nicely done, Ingrid. Art is at once personal and communal.
Your reaction in the chapel is a marvelous moment of clarity. The millions who had stood there sharing one art, while the singularity of one more appreciative soul is welcomed into the fold to someday stand exactly where you stood.
We North Americans have so little history yet. I think your gestures, small and large, are already contributing to art yet to be realized.
Really good discussion, Ingrid.
Peace, Lee

You need to know that rarely do people step up and say, 'what you did mattered' and you my phantom friend matter.
Comment from Phyllis Stewart
This is an excellent definition! Well written essay too, without spag jumping out to smack me in the face. :) I love your conclusion... WE are the artists in our own lives. We have the power to define art and surround ourselves with 'art' of our own choosing... to create it as well. :)

You are a rising star. Without a doubt you are an artist.

Thank you... what a nice thing to say. I don't know about that, but YOUR talent is clear to see!

Art: An Expression of Self by Spiritual Echo
This is beautifully written. The first 3 verses would make an excellent poem with a little thought. You are very descriptive. It paints very nice creative visuals. I heard Europe, especially Italy is ornate. Great story.
Good luck in the contest.

Yes you can indeed do what you say! What pleasant bit of self-reflection you have penned here. I enjoyed this essay quite a lot. One of the things I miss about Europe is it artistic charm, something that is definitely lacking here on a large scale. I feel as you do at times. This was very well written. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions today.
