Nice story, brought back many memories of my upbringing. But, we never had Christmas canceled. Most years we got underwear, socks or a maybe shirt. One time I got a " hand me down" as as my Christmas present (yes "present", as in only one gift). Interesting that you didn't mention your mother, probably a different story there? I don't have any editorial comments.

Yes, sometimes things happen at the wrong time, and it is more horrible than if it was at another time. One would say, "Why did it happen, now?"
Your Christmas story is a good about how sadness turned into happiness.
Good luck in the contest.

Very interesting.. I didn't know about Epiphany Day.
The year I was four, had been one of the worst ones for my family. - You don't need this comma.
Best wishes.

This is wonderfully written, and I enjoyed very much listening to it. There are many times in our lives when we have those days when Christmas never happens for us when I was a child. I have no memory of a really special Christmas day. You see we were a very poor family on a very poor farm and we didn't have much other than food and the produce we produced on the farm. Even though we didn't have Christmas, we always had more food than what we needed and we were very healthy children. Patricia.

Beautifully written but so sad. I hate when children have their dreams broken by adults. It is impossible to get the magic back once it has been lost. But I'm glad things turned around for the future. Thanks for sharing

Awe Gypsey this brough a tear to my eye. Its so difficult for families whethey fall on hard times and so many do, I remember a year that we recieved help from a local charity and recieved used toys and I know it sounds selfish as you recived none in your situation which was much works especially when you kept hoping in the magic....but in my situation it was the embarrassement when friends were talking and showing what they recieved... I was mortified and I think probably lied at the time about what I got.
Your parents made up for it which is the lovely ending to the story which you told very well, thanks for sharing and good luck with the contest.
Best wishes

the feast of the three kings. . . now i understand the waiting up all night for the three wisemen. . . you may want to add that into your story somehow (instead of the notes) - just a thought :)

other than that, a good true story
maybe add some dialogue between you and your siblings? just another thought lol...

didn't notice any spag or typos

thank you for sharing and good luck in the contest!

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. I was hoping for a Christmas miracle as I read. I'm sorry that didn't happen. This is a very well written contest entry. Good luck with the contest.

Oh, that's so sad. It isn't necessarily the presents that make Christmas. It's the hope that it brings. Christmas is the one time where miracles happen. So sorry you had to go through this. Gretchen

I can't imagine the courage it took a four-year-old to face the cruel truth that Christmas had been canceled from that year forward. This shows bravery to post a true story from your past where you were so poor you had no money for gifts and no place to call home. You and your siblings must have been crushed when your father announced that it would be canceled.
I admire you, my friend for posting this during the holiday season when everyone else is cheerful you write about the hard times during Christmas from long ago.
I feel for you and am moved by your story.
Thanks for touching the hearts of those of us on Fanstory.
Jesse
