Ciao Gypsy Blue Rose!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on haiku.

I only stated writing in July 2018 , seven months after the passing of my father ..

I found myself alone and for some odd reason I started thinking in rhyme.

I was never good with words and I'm by nature a listener.

Haiku is just a format for one like me.

I love the challenge
to formulate a thought in only 17 syllables or less is something that excites me.

I also appreciate when you give thumbs up to something I have written.

You don't offer empty comments .... your words have meaning and encourage.

Ciao!

Hi Gypsy, I found your prose very interesting and informative. You don't do anything by halves, which is very helpful to us all, thank you so much. Also I think we can always learn from each other, Giddy

Wow, this was amazing, Gypsy. I truly would like to learn more about Haiku Rules and will start by clicking on your extensive list. Then I will ask my questions. I have book marked this so I will have a reference point, thank you so much for answering Tom's question. Blessed be n hugs!

This is an informative post Gypsy. I don't know whether I will ever dare post a true haiku, I tend to go for simple 5-7-5s these days, but in secret it's not the same story haha! (I don't manage to post anywhere near the amount of stuff I produce). Do you know what I miss? Those MOBs you used to champion - I still have my artwork of a red river handy... and remember fondly when we were writing about covid.

    What's MOB?

5/7/5 poems are great, it's just not haiku... But close :). I challenge you to write one. You may send it to me before you post it and I will give you my honest feedback.

Thank you very much, Katherine. I appreciate your time and review. Blessings.

Oh, you are right, I haven't done any multi author because running two clubs take all my time... And my grandson :)

Hello Gypsy, I love when a question is asked, the person answers in detail, and you gave us (FS) a in-depth answer and illustrated the quiet beauty of haiku. Well done, well state. Great prose. Keep the blue waters of haiku flowing. Sincerely, LateBloomer ~ Margaret

Gypsy,
This is a wonderful mix of historical and educational facts of the haiku. I have trouble with the satori part of the haiku. With the or less part of the haiku definition can a lune about nature having a satori be called a haiku?

Yes! A lune can be a 3/5/3 haiku but you have to meet the other rules. Thank you very much, Joan. I appreciate your time and review. Blessings.

Another fine and informative write, Gypsy--I hadn't heard of this style of poetry, but then I only started writing when life bashed in my head and I had To slow down. I find haiku's a challenge to tell a story with few words

M,

A lovely bit of information - about yourself AND haiku. There is soooo much that could be said! *smile* You did a marvelous job of summing things up and sharing some wonderful golden nuggets without rambling and heading into long rabbit holes and going into detail about so many different things. I imagine this may have been just enough to intrigue many people and maybe make them curious enough to explore more. Nice job!

It might even be a good idea to do another of these from time to time? Just little lessons on different aspects of the form? Just a thought. You do this very well! Thanks so much!

Thank you very much, Robyn. You are right, there is so much to write about haiku. I focus on the things I like best and I feel are the basic foundation. I can do another about Senryu, or modern haiku ... Other forms. :)

Your opinion means a lot to me. Take care, my friend.

This is an excellent essay, Gypsy..The form is not to everyone's liking. But it will always resonate with some. I don't venerate Japanese culture or society, especially after visiting Japan. Yet the aspects you mention in your write appeal to me. For me haiku is satisfying. Writing it feeds my soul.

Thank you for sharing your talent so generously on this site.

Stay safe and blessed

Thank you very much, Julia. Some day I would like to hear the things you don't like about Japan. I guess the same can be said about other countries too.

Thank you very much for your feedback and kind review.

    Patronizing attitude to women
    Racism
    Cultural snobbery
    Rigid attitude to time
    Hunting dolphins

And yes most of these issues are global. But because Japan is a small ethnically homogeneous country, the effects of these flaws is magnified

    Wow, that's a lot. :(

Gypsy,

You do have a talent in composing Haiku. I enjoy reading the variety of Japanese poetry you post on FanStory. While I don't review every one, I do appreciate your talent and your reviews of my own posts.

Thanks for writing about your poetry story/essay.

Mark
