AMEN!!! We should all do what we can. I am angry that our own government has no money to help out with our FEMA funds because it was illegally redirected to the illegal immigrants. That does not negate our responsibility as individuals to help where we can.

    Hello Barbara,
you're not the only person who has responded about the government misusing our tax payer money to assist those who are in the country illegally. It's infuriating, however, it should serve as a wake up call to all of us that we can't depend on the government for anything. They don't produce anything, they just take from us and redistribute it to places that they feel deserve it, after raking off their own inflated wages. As you mention though, it doesn't relieve those of us who are Christians from answering the call of our fellow man. Americans are the most generous people in the world. I pray that multitudes will respond with an abundance for our fellow Americans. Have a blessed day gal.

This is a compassionate and poignant call for FanStorians to step up to the plate and help when help is needed. There are so many in need that it seems overwhelming sometimes. You point to Red Cross as a good place to start, and it is because they will be there for people around the country in need, not just one specific place.

If people Google "charitable organizations", there is plenty of information out there.

Thanks for the reminder of our humane needs and deeds, Tom.

    Hello Pam,
thanks so much for the great review gal. The need is so great and it sounds like in some places, like Asheville, the help isn't getting through, at least government help. Frankly, I wish they would stop wasting tax payer money and turn it over to the charitable organizations who have proven they have the ability and resources to get the job done. I wish I could do more to help them, it's going to take a long, long time before they recover.
    Have a blessed day gal.

This is good that you are reminding people what they can do in a time like that. Disasters seem to be striking more often. At 10, I was in a tornado in which my family lost everything but in a small-town people rallied to help. Years later, we lost to a fire. This storm was supposed to have gone right through Chattanooga. but it went slightly. Today my son-in-law leave here taking a huge truck of Gasoline, water, and other needed supplies and as many volunteers as he could get to help with manual labor.

    Hello Beth,
thanks for letting me know about your son-in-law. He's a hero in my eyes, please give him my heartfelt thanks. I would love to come down and work with Samaritan's Purse if I could. My health issues would make that difficult, though perhaps not impossible at this time. One thing I can do for sure is to send financial aid though. There are a lot of people in this country who have a lot of disposable income, we just need to tap into our hearts and realize that if the shoe were on the other foot, we'd hope desperately that someone cared enough to help. Thanks so much for the delightful review gal.

Thanks for the reminder. I was with two of my classmates at a reunion and they live in Marion NC just off 1-40.They are driving home (from MN) and taking their time. Thankfully they were prepared and the neighbors are using their generators and well for water. Times are coming when we are going to need to depend on each other for survival. Esther

    Hello Esther,
thanks so much for the great review gal. I believe that as much as possible we all need to be prepared for whatever might come our way. Part of that, in my opinion, is to get out of debt, so that when a disaster does strike anywhere in the world, we can respond financially, and generously. We do need each other, and as is increasingly apparent, we can't count on the government for help.
    Have a blessed day gal.

This is a great overview of the issue and call to help. I've actually been pleased with the response of individuals (not the government). Our church is sending a group to NC through Samaritans Purse, but had to cut the number short because there were no accommodation spots left available on SP's end. Volunteer turnout has filled them to capacity!
The SP website is super easy to navigate--the donation button is right at the top for hurricane relief.
Thanks for spotlighting this tragic situation.
Julie

    Hello Julie,
thanks so much for this encouraging review. I would so much love to be able to join Samaritans Purse in assisting those folks on the ground, but since I can't, I have already sent a donation, and am getting ready to send another one. Here in Alaska we're blessed with an annual dividend for each Alaskan every year. I can't think of a better way to spend part of it than to assist those in such need.
Please extend my heartfelt thanks to your church members. They've got the heart of God.
    Have a blessed day.

Thanks for posting your thoughts. We came through it nearly unscathed save for the inconvenience of no power or communications.
As I scanned for the first time how the neighbors fared just a few miles North of here, I cried. Western Carolina has lost 72 lives, and 200 + are missing. Mountain towns are now or soon will be debris on the coastal beaches. I never even gave thought to the jobs lost. It will take years of recovery for some locales, while others will never exist again.

    Hello Tom,
unfortunately, what you've written is true. Right now there is still shock over the devastation. As time goes on, I fear that things are going to get even worse, as reality hits. I've been through Asheville and loved the place. It's such a tragedy for anything so terrible to happen anywhere in the world. Fortunately Americans are a generous people. I hope we all respond with whatever help we can send. Have a blessed day.

It is always devastating watching the effects storms have on people's livelihoods, and the weather is only going to get worse. A well written piece, I thought it was insightful and I enjoyed reading it.

    Hello Jacob,
thanks so much for the fine review. Now is the time to come to the aid of our fellow Americans. We can't sit back and watch and not act. The need is so great, and counting on the government to act in an efficient and timely manner is not an option. The way we respond to this disaster is going to speak volumes about who we are as a people.
    Have a blessed day.

What a beautiful reminder this is from a man I've come to know who has a large and beautiful heart. I like every word you wrote here, and it has inspired me to make a donation to the charities you suggested. It shames me that I needed this compassionate reminder in order to do so. Thank you for being my conscience today, Tom. xoxox

    Oh my Rachelle,
we all get so busy in our lives that it's easy to forget that others are suffering. Don' be ashamed, the fact is that you've answered the call, and I know that you'll be blessed for it gal. I've discovered in my own life that we can't out give the Lord. What we pass out by the teaspoonful, He returns by the shovelful. It's His delight to bless His children. I think I've been remiss in not posting this sooner, but it's out there now. Thanks for your generosity gal.
    Have a blessed evening.

What a wonderful and timely essay Tom. I am in total agreement with everything you said and especially with the call to assist in any way we can. I personally like to give to Samaritan's Purse as well as the Salvation Army because I know there is very little waste and most of the donations actually go toward helping those in need and not to paying hefty salaries for administrators. Thank you so much for writing this and for genuinely caring about our fellow Americans. As always, your writing is excellent and captivating. MM

    Hello Adonna,
it's so nice to hear from you gal! Thanks so much for the generous stars and the delightful review my friend. I once saw a piece on TV that compared the salary of the person in charge of the whole Salvation Army vs the CEO or whatever he was of the American Red Cross. The difference was staggering. I've watched the way the Salvation Army works in people's lives, and I'm impressed.
I do hope all is well with you gal. I pray for you and Bob nightly. Please stay in touch.
    God bless and keep you.
