Why rewrite the Bible?

Firstly let me say that I am a devout Christian and am not getting at religion here. However, I truly do not understand why there are so many religious poems on this site. After all the Bible and Common Prayer books are full of beautiful poetry and most of the poems I read here are just different ways of saying the same thing. To me poetry uses metaphor and imagery to describe things in a different way. It does not simply rephrase something that has already been written. Sometimes a poem looks at a religious theme in a different way and, hence, it is a good poem but most of the others do not inspire me at all - sorry.

RE: Why rewrite the Bible?

The Bible has been consistently and continually rewritten since its inception. Constantly re-evaluated and reinterpretted, so why not?

RE: Why rewrite the Bible?
Sure I agree. People can write religious poetry if they want to but I don't think that it necessarily makes good poetry, which is what I thought we were trying do on this web site. For example, how do you review something that is taken almost word for word from one of the Gospels or a another Bible verse? It is hardly original poetry in a lot of cases or am I missing something profound here?

RE: Why rewrite the Bible?

I have to agree with you. Once you've stated your faith, how much can be said about.
