The ladder stood mysteriously on its own,
bemusing, begging me to climb.
So,
step by step, rung by rung,
I rose past the cumulus cluster
to find a radiant rainbow,
the keeper of all wishes ever made,
waiting to be granted.
I discovered
all my aspirations, my dreams,
most having slipped from memory.
Sorting through them,
I dispensed the debris
of ones made in foolish moments,
and left the more lofty ones.
Satisfied,
I descended the ladder
which disappeared
as soon as my foot touched ground.
I’m left wondering . . .
what just happened?
