A Rondeau Poem

The River Flows . . .

by damommy

The river flows without a care,
and no one thinks to wonder where
from whence it came or where it goes,
or what it sees.  Nobody knows
what stories it could share.

The trees along the way are bare,
and left to stand in cold despair
to watch the streaming highs and lows.
The river flows . . .

It hides beneath the misty air,
goes ‘round about the beavers’ lair.
Then ‘cross the stones but never slows
to kiss the bank where mosses grow.
It goes about its own affair,
the river flows . . .

In the last stanza I used 'grow' without the 's' that the other rhymes have.

A Rondeau is a French form, 15 lines long, consisting of three stanzas: a quintet, a quatrain, and a sestet with a rhyme scheme as follows: aabba aabR aabbaR. Lines 9 and 15 are short - a refrain (R) consisting of a phrase taken from line one. The other lines are longer (but all of the same metrical length).
