Ghost Town

by damommy

It stands forgotten
in a wooded land,
once thriving
with sounds of saw mills,
church bells,
and people going about their daily lives.
Gone
is the scent of fresh-cut timber.
The old school house
missing the laughter
of children at play
and the scrape of chalk on slates.
Abandoned
homes fell in
and roofs met floors in resignation.
Forsaken
gardens that once fed families
lie fallow,unseeded and untended.
Oddly,
the cemetery remains,
still cared for
generation after generation,
proof that life
once flourished here.

This reminded me of the town where my father was born. Little is left except the family cemetery. It once had a school, several stores, churches, and shops. When the railroad was diverted, the saw mill closed down, and everyone moved away. I still own land there.
