Despite Despair

by Sally Law

The sunny day seemed
like an insult.
A couple kissing,
and holding hands.
A child smiling,
with playful delight.
The sweet serenade of the robin.
Life’s simple joys.
Why was everyone so happy?
Well, not everyone.
Couldn’t they see
my dark despair?
Apparently, not.
So I . . .
waved at the sun,
greeted the couple,
blew a kiss to the child,
sang with the robin, and
soaked in the forgotten pleasures.
Today, I said goodbye
to despair.
