How the game played out
Chess
Check. check mate.
Was how fast I fell for you.
A seasoned rook see-sawing
vertically then horizontally
on the great game board of life.
One minute a standing, throned king
and in the next second,
a sacrificial pawn.
The bishop might have married us
but you chose amour with a knight
who jumped to the opposite corner
two squares by three
by protecting the crown
and not guarding his queen.
O, the battle royale I was willing to fight
at the drop of your white handkerchief
or would I have surrendered all
for one loving word or lingering kiss.
Check. check mate.
Chess.
A game not well played by a fool
especially
a fool in love with you.
