This Aching Abyss

 Reality betrays me,
eludes me,
slipping softly into ether;
whispers in a harried hurricane.
Teardrops in the ocean.
Plaintive cries for help,
in concentration death camps,
filled to overflowing
with the starving,
the tortured;
persecuted…
…and downtrodden—

Dare I look back
in fond reminiscence?
Dare I dream
the impossible dream?
To love,
To live…
To dance—
To feel?

No… I will not.
I must not
dream, love…live, or feel
Anything.

It is much safer here,
much more serene
in the urgent underbelly
of dire desperation.
No sound.
No soothing salve for the soul.
No tender tendencies.
No mercy.
This aching abyss is brutal—
Quiet here abounds.
But, at least here,
I feel
something…
