Free Verse
A chapter in the book To Cherish Thorns
With Head Held High
Shall I rise to greet
the grand new day?
though spindled and sprawled
ridicule like so many
carelessly tossed anvils
weigh me
down
the right thing
the noble road travelled
the "well dones"
and "good shows"
echo in the canyon
with
mocking
honey
dripping
tones
isn't the wicked
sneer of victory
a haughty prancing preference
to this snail's arabesque?
I have my honor
my precious pride
my dubious dignity
you have
the girl ...
