Closing Time at the EverAfter

by Delahay

Cinderella's on her third tonic and gin
As she watches the clock on the wall
Waiting for her prince to come in
Wondering why he didn't call

The bartender's skimming from the till
Thinking 'bout the boat he'll have one day
Using his wits and bits of wisdom he will
Tell stories to those who wander his way

Brando, Bogey, Cagney, and Flynn
Are throwing punches in the park
The coppers are there, no one wins
As the scene fades away into dark

About two, Prince Charming rides
In on his white iron horse
A pretty lady by his side
She is fresh from a divorce

As Cinderella looks for her shoe
Shattered like a heart of glass
She sees her prince and his lady who
Ignore her as they slide on past

The Ever After closes at three
Not all want to go on home
Looking for a place to be
They wander onward all alone

I've seen this show before
In a thousand bars somewhere
Where the losers walk out the door
And the winners were never there

Happiness can't be poured it seems
Love's never found in cards dealt
And Cinderella's hopes and dreams
Can be seen but never felt

The dancers all turn and sway
Before the final scene
And Cinderella slips away
Alone as she always seems

Prince Charming lies by his horse of steel
It's wrapped around a tanker truck
Along with all the dreams unreal
His life bleeds out with all his luck
