Carved in Stone: The Time Has Come

by Gypsymooncat

We tried

The time is here though its arrival comes as no surprise
Knowing you would soon be gone was written in the skies
Still I feel that jagged knife turn deep within my soul
Emotional exhaustion kept at bay now takes its toll

Waves of sorrow washing by me, drop by drop seep in
Then drag me by the ankles, in descent I slowly spin
Impotent and powerless I’ll watch you walk from here
While I pray we taught you well enough to face your fear

For I have seen that look; a thoughtful, contemplative stare
A fleeting glimpse of what you hide till it’s no longer there
Troubled waters flow below in foaming, rushing streams
Your smile a camouflage; beneath the surface, stifled screams

Never has there been a word or sign to show you cared
Anger kept your beasts away when teeth of fear were bared
Indifference overtook where firestorms once left their mark
Leaving me to stumble, blinded, slashing at the dark

Late at night I’ve lain awake and wondered, were we right?
Have we given you the strength to rise above this fight?
Though you brushed it off, ignoring how it made you feel
That little boy inside still cries, to him the pain is real

I can do no more to bring those sentiments to light
Any time you thought I might, you reined them back in tight
Defeat is never easy, though the truth was carved in stone
The time has come; it’s up to you to find your peace alone

Go my boy, this is your life, your chance to live it right
Go, before I cry or try to stop your youthful flight
Reluctantly this mother’s heart will set your spirit free
And hope one day, my son, your heart will fondly think of me
