The Shining Pyramid

by Terry Reilly

                                        Ra
                                 beams down
                               dazzling shafts
                             which encompass
                           the tape'ring pointed
                        structure of Khufu's tomb
                      lighting his spirit's passage
                     up  to  the  eternal  kingdom
being  reflected on all  four sides
by Tura limestone, granite from Aswan

The Great Pyramid of Giza is 4600 years old, the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, and the oldest. It was built by the Pharaoh Khufu to serve as his tomb (and that of his family and favourites). It pointed to Heaven and contained a cylindrical vertical internal passage which would enable his spirit to ascend to that higher realm. Although hard to imagine when visited today, this dull reddish-brown monument would originally have flashed and sparkled in the sunlight, radiating out horizontally to be seen from some distance. To achieve this, the local drab limestone was intermingled with brilliant white limestone brought from Tura, and granite blocks from Aswan.
Ra was the Sun God worshipped by the ancient Egyptians.
