Hey, Bozo Nose!

by Laurie Holding

Interesting, she thought. Painless, too.
She hit the numbers on her phone with the tip of her nose, the nose kids used to make fun of back in school.
She smiled.
"NineOneOne, what's your emergency?"
"I fell down my basement stairs and can't move anything below my neck."
"Your location, ma'am?"
She opened her eyes, looked at cobwebs. What's the worst that could happen, here?
-Paralysis?
What would she do if that were the case? No partner, no insurance, no children, just a house full of stuff collected long after dark on garbage days. Broken furniture, crushed Christmas wrap.
-Ah, the cat.
Felix came to her then, wrapped himself around her neck, blinked twice.
-Go ahead.
He raised his body and laid it onto her face.
Interesting, she thought, as she let his warmth cover her mouth and nose.
The nose kids used to make fun of back in school.
