A Dying Breed

Sumatran Orangutan

by Cecilia A Heiskary

Little orangutan with the rusty hair
Running through the forest without a care
You are the slowest of the great apes
Making it hard for you to escape

Poachers come calling, nowhere to go
They take your babies, put them on show
You are critically endangered, as we know
Your numbers are so very low

The rate your habitat is going away
You may not be around another day

Sumatran Orangutan is one of 3 species. They live in tropical forest and swamp forest.
Found only in Indonesia on the Island of Sumatra. There population is less than 13,000 and declining due to poachers and habitat destruction.

Males are semi-solitary and only mingle with females to breed.
