Friend or Foe
Trusting Soul
I never saw you in the light,
Yet felt you near through darkest night.
A steady hand, a whispered guide,
A presence always by my side
You led me when my steps would stray,
Dried my tears and cleared the way.
No praise you sought, no light you claimed,
Still, in the shadows, you remained.
But shadows twist, and truth unwinds,
A veil was lifted from my mind.
I turned to see the one so true —
And found a stranger cloaked in you.
The voice I'd trusted, soft and low,
Had led me where he'd meant to go.
Not to safety, not to light —
But to the edge, alone at night.
My eyes now open, no longer blind,
The outstretched hand I thought was kind
Drew me close, then held me tight,
A whispered lie in dying light
Not friend, but foe — too late to run,
The final blow, the deed was done.
With fading breath, I saw at last
Your hand had struck — the die was cast.
