The Phoenix (For Jackline Costa)

by JJ McGillicutty

The cold and unforgiving void
Bore nothing, all was lost.
A fate that she could not avoid,
She paid the heavy cost.

She lay in ash, afraid to move,
Amid a frigid breeze.
She prayed for all the battered, bruised,
And those upon their knees.

As hope seemed drained from all the world,
A spark anew was born,
A warmth that now began to spread
Throughout her ruined form.

And as the embers glowed within,
Her spirit kindled too,
And all that was a wasted wreck
Began to rise anew.

A searing thought of what would be,
And what should be forgot,
Her ashen wings could now shake free
Their gray, encrusted rot.

And now the flame takes root and builds
As she remembers well
The strength that once defined her will
And caused her heart to swell.

The flame engulfs her fragile frame
And sheds a piercing light,
And in the blaze she hears her name,
And struggles to take flight.

Her strength returns amid the flame,
A passion fills her soul.
She finds her mind is freed from pain,
Her spirit bears no toll.

And then the flame engulfs her whole
She opens up her eyes,
Her strength returned, she hurls herself
Toward the open sky.

She leaves the past behind her now,
She's confident and pure.
The past is ash, and yet somehow
Her future seems assured.

And she is now perfected here,
Reborn and forged in flame.
From ashes into glory born,
A destiny unchained.

She rises here, the heart and soul;
She rises here, the sun;
She rises here, the phoenix heart;
The heart that wants to run.

She is the one who rises high,
She is the one who burns,
She is the phoenix of my eye,
She is the one that turns.

She is you.

Eu te amo.
