Sailor Dad

by Regina Elliott

Boot camp kicked my derriere,
graduated from there,
newly in the Navy,
instead of out to sea,
I got stationed in Washington, DC.

I first saw my husband Mike,
felt an instant like.
He was full of esprit,
resembled John Belushi,
eyes of a stag so earthly brown,
we loved nearby Georgetown,
and opera's Luciano Pavarotti,
we, quite mirthful and dotty!

We got our own apartment,
we were content,
toured White House-
daughter in utero,
we let my family know.
Although Mike was only
twenty-one,
his role as a loving father
had begun.
He was her, "Sailor Dad,"
no better father she could
have had.

He went on deployments,
his absence thanks to
the government.
In his crackerjack uniform,
he held us through the
storms,
of our modest financial
means,
yet, we held on to
hopeful dreams.

Navy Baby, Adrienne-
his princess,
he guided her to success,
she was a high school
cheerleader,
graduated with honors
and his pride for her.

Not long later on a
November eve,
Joe, our son-in-law to be,
asked Mike for his blessing
he was stressing.
Mike smiled, said "Yes,"
envisioned her in a
wedding dress.
The next day,
at the Biltmore Estate,
they got engaged and
set the date.

On a sunny autumn day
with mums in bloom,
Mike proudly walked her
to her groom.
Although he had been
a civilian for awhile,
I still saw him as her
Sailor Dad, and I smiled.

He passed away a few
years ago,
our hearts mourn-
but we know,
his sense of humor survives,
in my daughter's wit it's alive,
Sailor Dad is a forever
Paw-Paw too,
his grandchildren his
little crew.
Mike, you sail on in
our thoughts everyday-
Anchors Aweigh!

I wrote this tribute poem to my
late husband, who was the best

wonderful grandfather.
