She wanted to fly.
Evelyn Emu
by damommy
Walking along her usual pathway, mumbling to herself, Evelyn was bored. I walk the same path every day, eat the same things every day, cool off in the same pond every day. I’m so boring, I bore myself.
Stopping to watch the birds in the trees above, she thought again of how much she wished she could fly. It was the only thing she’d ever wanted to do. I used to think if I ran fast enough and flapped my puny little wings, I’d take off. It never worked. The only thing I succeeded in doing was kicking up dirt and exhausting myself. Oh, what I’d give to fly!
After the birds flew away, she continued down the path, becoming a little more depressed with each step, wondering what life was all about. It was then something across the road caught her eye. She’d never crossed the road. Her mother had warned her about those rolling noisy things that hit innocent creatures without warning, but this time, she might dare to do it.
What enticed her to do something she’d been told never to do was a huge sign on the other side of the road that read, “Want real freedom? Want to soar the skies and see the world? Enroll in our flying classes. Sign up today!”
Why had she never noticed this sign before? She could have been flying around all this time. She was so thrilled, she could hardly stand still, and now was time to summon the courage to see what was over there. Nothing could make her do it but the chance to fly.
Just wait ‘til I have those lessons. Everyone will be amazed when they see me flying over their heads. I’ll prove all of them wrong that said I’d never fly!
