Gus And Beau

by Regina Elliott

My name is Gus,
I usually don't make a fuss,
I'm 7, slow and easygoing,
lately my gumption is showing.
Everything was fine,
in fact, sublime,
until this big klutz Beau
moved in,
he thought he was gonna
win.

I don't mind sharing kibble,
but when he drinks water
he dribbles!
We have a big backyard
to explore,
he lays in the grass
and snores!

His coat is black,
amber eyes, beauty
he doesn't lack.
I used to have my humans
to myself,
until Milk-Bone breath
thought he was stealth,
cozying up to our alpha
human Adrienne,
I growled because that
sure messed with my zen!
I admit, he's the faster
squirrel chaser,
as watchdog, thinks he's
greater.

We do play-fight alright,
still I did something you'd
say was spite,
Beau and I cuddled up
to Adrienne on the couch,
his clodhopper paws he
stretched in my face, ouch!
"That does it!" I said in
my head,
I'll do something sneaky
instead,
within moments, Beau's
eyes got real big, at last,
I passed silent, yet
devastating gas!
my humans cleared
the room-
now, who's King,
you canine buffoon!
