Paved in Joy

by Fleedleflump

The builders working through the burning heat
Have never lived as grand as what they build.
Although they break the sweat, they’re just the meat
That burns for gods’ amusement as it’s grilled.

Possessed of need, we feed our weekly tropes
Amongst the clamour of our busy days.
The humble poet prattles on of hopes;
He knows the peons battle their dismay.

They tumble like the weeds along their paths
Of destiny mapped out when they are born,

Forever bubbles popping in the baths
Run on behalf of those who watch with scorn.
Emancipated? Even clowns must see
Eviscerated dreams can’t make us free.
Despite this doom, a fundamental truth
Of humans and their spirits is at hand;
Myopic dreams protect us from the proof

Involved in dragging feet into the sand.
So, even if we’re focused on the poor

Parading fun in rags and cheapest dirt,
Availed of scraps they foraged from the floor,
Violas to the violins of hurt.
Eventually, joy will find a way -
Despite the best endeavours of the cruel

In deference to parts we have to play,
Negating all the hate some treat as gruel.

Just open up your deferential eyes,
Ovate upon the glory of this prize:
You have the power, soaking you inside.

I hope you enjoyed the read.

This is about how the workers/poor don't get to enjoy the things they create for the rich (the gods), and seem stuck to their predetermined paths. Those gods, whilst needing the poor, still look down upon them with scorn.

And yet, despite all the reasons for bitterness, there is joy to be found in every walk and class of life. That joy negates the hate that some seem to feed on (gruel) and shows us the path to personal 'freedom' (ie enjoying life) is to do what makes one happy.
