I am not my Wheelchair

by Jesse James Doty

Every time I dream while asleep, I am always walking and standing erect and proud. My wheelchair is a tool, not my identity.
This tool I use is only a temporary solution and I am determined to walk again in my future, no matter what.

Since May of 2020, I have had to use a wheelchair to get around in my apartment and outside as well. And to this day, I have never seen myself in a wheelchair or other device to help me walk in my dreams.

Although my knee surgery keeps being postponed I have not given up hope by any means. By sheer determination and hard work, I know I will walk again...I already bought two wonderful walking sticks to help me get around after the surgery is successful.

I know and love the nature paths I will walk, and I will go there every chance I get. David, my friend of many years now wheels me on these nature paths, and we dream out loud of the time when we will walk together side by side.

So, when you happen to see me in my wheelchair please notice me rather than what I am riding in. Say hello to me, as well as the person who is pushing my wheelchair, and know that I do not identify as a wheelchair-bound individual. See me, as I see myself, standing proud and free.
