Strange Beings

mermaid, merman
swim to ocean's edge
observe creatures
reclining on the beach
sing silently
songs of laughter
while watching
these beings who flock to
sand and surf

feeding gulls
soaking up rays
merpeople wonder why
they come
to the all encompassing
Mother ocean
but do not dwell in her
like the whales, seahorses,
dolphins, goliath grouper

strange beings
on two legs
imagination gone wild
no tails
but voices and loud music
drown out the surf

merpeople sigh
absorbing the scene
of a world that
baffles
inhabitants of the sea
