Bursting my Bubble

by Elizabeth Emerald

You may have read my recent posts as to my having to be ever vigilant in the "real" virtual worId, meaning the world of online publication.

I've simultaneously lauded and bemoaned my "meticulous" (read: stickler) editor, who has me anticipating citations for punctuation, misusage, concision, and clarity. I'm eternally grateful to this picky old b brilliant and self-less lady, whose tireless efforts in my behalf go monetarily unrewarded.

Moreover, not only must I pass muster with my editor, but I also have to continually bear in mind that I'm writing for an unknown audience.

I have to continually resist the temptation to flaunt my idiosyncrasies.

Here in StoryLand, I have a sort of running gag amongst my fan club, in which I call attention to my wise-assed, ill-advised, half-witted attempts at being clever, so as to poke fun of myself for thinking myself to be clever.

Such affectations as using sardonic quotation marks (see above), punny wordplay, (see above), and superfluous parentheticals (see above) do not go over well in the world outside our bubble.

As to the cross-outs (see above), there is no such option in their text editor.

Nor does their human editor appreciate the special characters, such as I delight in using to creatively render vulgar language.
