I, either, have, too, many or not enough so I can't win.
Comma Quandary
by Elizabeth Emerald
I've been playing solitaire of sorts these past six weeks. No cards, literal or virtual, are involved; my game entails re-re-re-editing my daily submissions (to an online publication) in an effort to anticipate (mainly) comma citations from my stickler editor.
I win some, lose some. I've been attempting to extrapolate the sundry rules from my editor's helpful mini lessons (and by supplemental googling).
Alas, many of the rules are counter-intuitive. Here's a recent example from when she messaged me that she was turning over my work to the other editor):
Now [comma!] Victor will edit your story. Then [comma!] he will get back to you with the usual boatload of comma citations [no comma!] even though you've sworn on a virtual stack of grammar tomes that you have the rules down pat.
I'm bailing out [comma?] lest I introduce a comma error.
