Facebook algorithm flags figure of speech
Censored in a FLASH
by Elizabeth Emerald
My friend Michael was chatting with his cousin Tom on Facebook.
Tom, who doesn't drive, needed to pick up paint at Home Depot.
Michael said he'd run him over with his car.
Tom never got the message.
It boomeranged, with the admonition that the content is "in violation of community standards."
Apparently, Michael's innocuous words were perceived as a threat.
Michael sought to appeal the verdict through the channel provided.
The rote apology for the "inconvenience" made clear there were no humans to mediate the dispute.
Thus, the literal-minded algorithm trumped common sense.
