Ole Hoofer and Me

by damommy

I know you’re tired, ole Hoofer, boy,
we’ve not seen water for a while.
Don’t give up now, we must be close,
let’s try to make it one more mile.

Mirages pop up ‘fore our eyes.
Pay them no mind, they’re devil’s work
to fool us, make us lose our minds
and send us o’er the edge, berserk.

Keep going, pal, we’re closer now,
just round that bend, past one more hill,
and when we find that wat’ring hole,
well, bless me, we’ll drink to our fill.

It’s yonder!  See it, Hoofer boy?
You got us here, my faithful steed.
You got us to this cooling place,
did what it took to meet our need.

Rest now, ole sport, you’ve done your job.
No one could have a better friend.
Your time has come, I understand,
but you’ve been faithful ‘til the end.
