Man bemoans an ''accident'' of his own making

Repeat Customer Complains

by Elizabeth Emerald

Two-penny tantrum

Back in the eighties, when AIDS ran rampant, I volunteered at a needle exchange program.

The goal of the program was to prevent transmission of HIV amongst drug users who shared needles. Addicts would trade in used needles for sterile ones.

Tim was a hardcore addict who injected heroin into his neck.

Week after week, Tim would show up, feverish, neck reddened around the site of his latest infection.

Week after week, the nurses would implore Tim to quit shooting dope into his neck.

Week after week, Tim would whine: Why does this always happen to me?
